from the london independent:

The deputy leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London, Daniel Moylan, made a rather unexpected policy decision last week - unveiling plans to start allowing cyclists to ride the wrong way down one-way streets in his borough. Under this crazy scheme, there will be no road markings or separation from the traffic travelling in the opposite direction. Instead, cyclists will simply be given the freedom of the road.
Although I commend the councillor's logic - cyclists do it anyway, so why not legalise it - I'm not sure such a haphazard approach will make the streets of London's richest borough any safer for us two-wheelers.

the cyclotherapy column is a great feature of the paper. find it at?

In Melbourne (certainly in the areas I rode in) a similar policy applies to most one ways.  One way streets are marked as one-way except for bicycles.  In many cases, the linked bike paths go the wrong way down one way street.  There are markings in the latter case, but generally marked space is provided for bicycles on all roads.

i love this bit:

I can't help cynically wondering whether the whole scheme has been cooked up because one of the borough's most illustrious residents - the Tory leader, David Cameron - was caught by a tabloid reporter riding the wrong way down a one-way street recently.

My Daughter who lives in London, and commutes by bike has done it a number of times.

She has been stopped by bobbies - fortunately for her she is very blond, and only has to flutter her eyelids for them to to let her go free.

I warned  her that she will come up against a Brunette Bobette soon and not be so lucky.
