if they are are a decent wheel set with tires, they will hold,

i rode the Argus at 4 bar and i'm 145kgs,

but that is  just me, and experiences...

4 bar might exceed the limit of the mtb tyres.

if your bike is a 29er you can get a set of cheap wheels and put road tyres on it. Better even than MTB slicks but you'll need an extra cassette and rotors (but you don't need to worry about redoing the tubeless on your MTB wheels when changing between slicks and knobblies).

It might be better getting a second hand road bike though. Since you use the IDT alot, this might also be good as you can keep the roadbike on the IDT as a "permanent" trainer which you can use in road races as well.

Dunno Darryn. AFAIK most mountain bike rims aren't specced for anything over 3.5 bar. My Bontrager carbon wheels have a maximum rating of 3.4. Undoubtedly there's a margin of safety too.

FWIW, depending upon tyre and application etc, lower rolling resistances may be achieved at lower pressures rather than higher.

Short answer: Roadbike makes it a bit easier, less rolling resistance, less weight, less time for talking sheyt on the route.

I did the 94.7 on my SS mtb spec'd with my standard setup and saguaro barzo tyre combo at 3 bar. I had one hell of a jol on the ride (granted I was fairly fit at the time), finished the ride in around 5 hours, a whole bunch of tequila's (thanx to the guys on Malibongwe) and a couple of beers later.

Unless you are planning on breaking a PB or keeping up with a specific group just keep your bike as is and go enjoy the ride!
