I have an old shimano 9 speed 105 groupset that was taken off bike that was quite badly damaged in an accident. The set works fine and it's just been sitting around gathering dust, so I'm looking at getting a cheapish frame and wheelset off the bikehub and building up a budget roadbike. The wheels and frame from the original bike are long gone.

What I understand is, once shimano started to make 11 speed casettes, the freebody got a bit longer. But if I find a wheelset with 10speed (or smaller) HG freehub, I should be fine. Is that correct?

Hi Nick,

just commenting based on my experience with direct mount trainer.

The 11 speed hub is a bit longer than for lower speeds. It seems that 10 and 9 speed are the same length.

You can mount the 9 speed cluster on an 11 speed hub if you use a spacer at the back (first mount spacer, then cluster). I read that the required  thickness is 1.8 mm.
