Unfortunately there are no universal rules as to how many links long your chain should be, as there are a number of other factors that play into it, like:Chain stay lengthHard tail or dual suspensionIf dual suspension, how much travel and what type of linkage (this determines chain growth)Derailleur cage length (this is a factor in the allowance for accommodating chain growthAs you can see, it can get quite complex.... if you want to take a theoretical approach to it. The practical approach (fit, test, adjust) is way easier and there are a number of guides on how this can work. Hope that helps!
