Thanks, there actually looks like a massive upgrade to the ones I currently have on my bike.

The reason I ask is that the platform on the basic plastic pedals with the small cage does not offer enough support for the foot. 

 

There is a good chance that your discomfort starts there. 

I've only ever known those as Bear traps. Probably about as comfortable as an actual bear trap too.
