I’m going out on a limb here, but after hours of fruitless/inconclusive internet searches, I’m trying my luck here and hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

girlfriends 2017 model Captur is intermittently giving a “check auto gearbox” message on the dash, and then loses 2, 4, 6 gear.

Renault dealership simply says they can’t do anything, and the only solution is to replace the gearbox at around R85k…

But simply switching off and on again resolves the issue, and there are no funny noises, mechanical or otherwise coming from the car and it drives normally till the error randomly pops up again. So it is obviously an electrical issue or a faulty control soleniod or something. But I can’t find anyone willing to even look at the car in stellenbosch or Somerset west.
