  1. All I am aiming for is a to make it to the finish line in one piece ahead of cuttoff time. I’m not too worried about the ride or the swim. It’s the run that worries me, because I hate the discipline, and this is where I need to focus. I have been a MTBer for more than 20 years, and riding long distances is not an issue, ditto with swimming. Have been doing +-2400km a month (2x 80-110km rides each weekend with shorter HIIT sessions in the week), and at least 2 1.2km+ swims a week. But virtually no running. But yeah, running off topic now
  2. And here I thought road bikes were gonna be simpler than mtb
  3. Because the feed got spammed by the event bot, I’m just giving this a little bump
  4. Hi guys. I’m an absolute noob when it comes to bikes with skinny wheels, but I have decided to give the June half iron man a go, and see how I feel about this whole triathlon thing. So I need to start shopping for a road bike. But I want to buy something relatively cheap, from the classifieds, but I have no idea what sizes to put into the search bar. I have always ridden and felt more comfortable on Large frame MTBs, even thought I am borderline between L and M according to most brands sizing. I am 1.78 but have relatively long legs, and that is probably why I prefer large MTBs. So what is the comparable size range in Road Bikes, and how specific is the sizing. can i look 1 cm up or down, and then make up the difference with seat position and stem length or doesn’t it work that way on road bikes. The simple fact that there are so many very specific frame sizes, makes me think it is pretty important to get it just right. Compared to the generic S-M-L-XL gaps with MTBs Looking forward to advice/pointers. I feel dirty going to a bike shop and getting measured up, even if I know I’m not even remotely considering buying from them…
  5. iPhone 13 costs the same here as in the UK, in fact about a grand cheaper here like for like on the 128gb iPhone 13. Difference not so much outright cost, it’s purchasing power as many others have stated. In the UK 900 quid although not cheap is within reach for most of the middle class for a once every 2 year splurge, without leaving the pantry empty for a month or two. In SA, 20k is more than most of the middle classes take home salary for a month. Glad your sorted. Crazy that the software reset/flash wasn’t the first point of action. Sure You can’t be serious? Apple watches are fashion accessories with some sports functionality. They aren’t and don’t try to be nearly as tough as a top end garmin or suunto outdoor sports watch. They are not made to take knocks at all, and if you consider the actual tech inside the watches is mass produced and pretty cheap, the apple watches are insanely expensive compared to the mil spec devices from garmin and the like.
  6. Based on my personal experience, having been in a similar situation as the OP, I am pretty sure the R4k is not just a battery replacement. The battery might be the initial cause of the fault, but as he himself said the entire unit is dead now. Garmin will be replacing the entire unit. Basically a brand new watch (the internals at least), all that remains of the original watch is your case and strap. I don’t think it’s too bad a deal in that case. I do think the warranty after repair should be more than 90 days though. You could order a battery off eBay and have the local Pakistani shop replace the battery, but it might or might not solve the problem, and I would never trust the waterproof seal of the unit again. This I can’t agree with more. The pricing has gotten absolutely mental. There is no way to justify that price. But it’s the same as a top end smartphone, or a R200k+ bike. They sell it for what they know the market is willing to pay
  7. I’m going out on a limb here, but after hours of fruitless/inconclusive internet searches, I’m trying my luck here and hoping someone can point me in the right direction. girlfriends 2017 model Captur is intermittently giving a “check auto gearbox” message on the dash, and then loses 2, 4, 6 gear. Renault dealership simply says they can’t do anything, and the only solution is to replace the gearbox at around R85k… But simply switching off and on again resolves the issue, and there are no funny noises, mechanical or otherwise coming from the car and it drives normally till the error randomly pops up again. So it is obviously an electrical issue or a faulty control soleniod or something. But I can’t find anyone willing to even look at the car in stellenbosch or Somerset west.
  8. Would also like to know. I have used it for years, and not run into problems.
  9. I must be doing something very very silly, but how does one create an account? I can only find the option to log in, but not to create a new account
  10. You need to drop the Stumpjumer EVO out of this list. Its a totally different animal to the other two bikes mentioned. Having to choose between the Epic EVO and the Stumpjumper is not an easy choice to make. It would have to come down to the type of riding you plan to do. From your description above, the Epic EVO sounds like the bike to go for. I have a 2021 stumpjumper, and with a set of XC tires its a great Marathon bike too, but it is meant as an all out trail bike. So for your described riding, the Epic EVO makes more sense
  11. realise this was like a month back already, but for future reference I had the same happen with my previous Spartan, and Suunto replaced the entire casing no questions asked. it was already out of warranty but only for a few months, so they did a goodwill replacement and then extended the warranty for another 2 years on the casing Ultimo really is awesome. Garmin can learn a thing or two from them.
  12. Ride In Coffee Shop, Bike Rentals and Tours 021 883 3985 https://maps.app.goo.gl/PGt4pprWU6zy6iF66 They on the road to Jonkershoek gate. They have a fleet of well maintained spez stump jumpers available at very good prices. You will battle to find proper full sus mtbs at better rates, and they will deliver into Cape Town also on request
  13. Not sure on the spec of the treks mentioned above, but between the stumpy and the Scott, my money would be on the stumpy, purely due to much better fork. Stumpy has a RS 35, which is miles and miles stiffer than the judy with 32mm (or is it 30mm?) Stanchions. Other specs between them is much of a muchness.
  14. Any idea how strictly the no spectators thing will be applied tomorrow? Pretty ridiculous that soccer games can take place in front of stadium crowds again, but the epic is still strictly without spectators. Would be nice to go watch the prologue tomorrow
