Need to get new MTB SPD pedal shoes and I've seen some awesome sneaker variants (see pics) - what are the major differences and/or downsides to MTB shoes vs sneakers? Have been using stiff sole Olympics and Ryder shoes til now.

I use these exact shoes. If you are into XC or marathon racing and need to get the best performance from your shoes these are not for you. They have a bit more flex in the soles than the shoes you arer used to. If you are just riding for fun and wear the shoes alot while off the bike, grabing a beer after the ride, or you have to get off and push these will be way better. They are way comfier off the bike while still being good enough for normal riding.

Think of it like shorts. If you wear lycra these arent for you. If you wear baggies then they likely are.
