Hi, has anyone safely used stem-extenders on mountain bikes? Have been reading a bit, but seen nothing conclusive.

Thanks,

R

Sorry to ask this question, but are you referring to a stem or steerer extender? I have been using a steerer extender for years without any issues. They are particularly useful when fitting a clamp-on stem to a threaded type steerer tube on older bikes.

Hi Mook, perfectly valid question. Yes an extension for a steerer. Is your extension one you bought, or made?

Thanks,

R

Hi @DodgeB

Bought mine from Decathlon if I can recall. It actually works like a charm. No play or movement on the extension. I use mine on an early 90's Gary Fisher 26" hardtail with a threaded steerer. I wanted to replace the original goose neck quill stem with a newer stem and gravel bar combination.

I do not regret this mod for one second.

Cool, thanks. I also have a 96/7 GF Tassajara, which is what I started doing mountain biking on. Fabulous bike, very well made.

😂 What a coincidence 😳

Got a Tassajara myself. Got it brand new in 1994 and still ride it 4 times a week. Before and after. The Fisher is now a gravel grizzly.

This is the steerer ext. I got. Chris Willemse Cycles is selling a similar unit now for R230.

Depends very much on what kind of riding you'll be doing. If it's anything reasonably spicy consider a replacement steerer tube.
