Flying with a bicycle - tips for the uninitiated

You should have done the research before booking your ticket. Like others said: Rent a bike. It's a no-brainer really. For under R6k you get a very decent road bike for 8 days and you don't have the hassle with moving it around. I did BCBR in Vancouver a few years ago and if rentals were as easily accessible back then, I would have rented a bike for the event, no doubt. I remember lugging my bike box around on public transport, had to pay a moerse surcharge to fly from Canada to the US and could not find a storage place on our last day in NYC when our flight out was at 2am, so I was stuck at JFK since 12pm with nowhere to sit land side (no mugg & bean or even a takeaway).

I frequently travel to Portugal and rent bikes from https://gocyclingportugal.com/

Their service is great, the bikes good, and their rates reasonable.  Waaaay cheaper and far less risky than flying your bike.

Friends of mine used them. Better specced bikes than what we have at home for rental options and super easy to mix up a holiday / work trip.
