Locking out the shock is mainly done to prevent pedal-induced bobbing and thus conserve energy. On a downhill I doubt you're going to be getting that much force through the cranks, so it probably won't make much difference. Unless the pedal-bobbing is a problem, I'd say leave it active. Better to have that safety, especially if you're not used to riding rigid.

 

Another debatable context is BMX-type tracks, where you're looking to get pump off the jumps and downslopes. The suspension just soaks it all up and makes it really difficult to flow through properly, but I'd be scared to commit to locking it up.
