From the Zipp Wheel Manual:

"TIRE PRESSURE Volumes of data have been produced showing decreased tire performance at high tire pressures, and our studies have been no different. We recommend 100?110 psi for all nylon-cased tires (such as Michelin, Continental, and Vittoria Ultra Speed), and 110?125 psi for cotton and softer material-cased tires (such as Vittoria CX, Vredestein, and Veloflex). Pressures above these will decrease tire grip and actually increase rolling resistance on most road surfaces, as the tire generates more heat conforming to the uneven road surface. The tire PSI rating on the sidewall of your tire is the MAXIMUM SAFE PRESSURE, indicating the amount of air pressure sufficient to damage or increase risk of tire failure. If you have questions about your tire?s optimal pressure please call the tire manufacturer or contact its website for further information."

I was on your wheel when your tyre popped , thought it was my tubby. Got a huge fright - lucky we were going slowly at the time. I ride bora and pump my tubbies to close on 12 bar. I have gatterskin's on them - havent had a single problem with them in more than a year.

See my post with the extract from the Zipp Wheel manual. It seems that high tire pressure actually affects the tire's performance negatively!

It sure affected the handling. The handling of the tubbies at 9-10 bar was much morse than my Eastons I used for the rest of the tour, felt much more in controll of the bike on the descends, and the rough surfaces.

Cool, another excuse to add to my little black book of excuses.

Just inspect your tubbys before you ride, all it take is one small deep cut on surface rubber and what happens is the pressure of the inner tube pushes through the opening in the surface rubber like a small black bubble and will explode straight away or once it touches tar, stone any thing else! The same thing happens to normal tires too! Stick to tire pressure printed on the side walls of you tires that what they there for other wise change your tire brand! I ve had tubbys that you can pump 15 bars, dam rock hard!

Hope this helps!

How scary was it comming down that decent on the first stage after the turn arround  - I was doing 80km plus and I was on my brakes plus there was a group of 40s comming arround that corner when I was going down and on top of that I am not the best decender arround.
