Is it normal for a Fox suspension fork to have a slight layer of oil on the stanchions when compressed and extended? Same with the Fox RP2 rear shock...is this something that needs to be looked at or considered normal?

That very this layer of oil is for lubrication.

Be sure to wipe those surfaces after every ride, as dirt sticks to that oil and slowly works its way past the seals and into the fork inners.

So when do you have to replace the oil then? If there is a film of oil, then it needs to be replaced at some point, I assume.

Yes, depending on your riding conditions (wet & muddy vs dry etc), about every 50 to 100 hours.

(Not sure how many people actually do that though)
