Controlc is in a bad mood today' date=' the DA managed to get hold of him hiding in the Cooke Islands and now he is all upset with everyone.[/quote']

IT peoples are the same everywhere. For some or other reason they appear to be very balanced people........ they have a chip on every shoulder. They always make you wait and then blame you for being stupid for doing things they should have prevented.

oi fanboy...

just because most people dont write virii for linux, doesnt mean linux cant get virii

I'm not dumb enough to execute the thing, especially not with "root" privileges.

The reason more virii are written for Windoze as opposed to Mac and *nix, has much less to do with popularity and much more to do with the piss poor security model M$. However M$'s PR department has everyone believing other wise.

i understand your point fully. but now - imagine this. try explaining to dumb end users about chmod 0777 or not executing files with root privelidges. hell. most of them cant even type their password properly

This is a hoax (shock! horror!)

The snopes link does talk about a real virus, correct, but that's not the virus the e-mail talks about. The "burn a hole" in your hard drive rubbish is another virus hoax altogether.

http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/invitation.asp

NOTE:   Readers should take particular care not to confuse the real postcard/greeting card virus with a number of virus-related hoaxes that have been circulating for several years. A variety of messages forwarded by well-intended people to warn others about the Postcard virus contribute to this confusion by including within them links to our article about the "Virtual Card for You" hoax (or by mistakenly incorporating elements from that hoax into their warnings). Other versions of the postcard virus warning erroneously combine it with elements of the Invitation virus hoax.

You have a very valid point, however look at it this way. M$ has not improved computer literacy, it just lowered the standards.

Most (l)users these day's have no clue what a file system is, and to be honest shouldn't be using a computer at all.

I'm so glad I don't do end (l)user support, because if I did I'd be spending my spare time assisting with the development of weapons of mass destruction.

I still have nighmares about answering the support phone at the ISP where I worked for a while ....

(l)user: I just deleted the internet

me: what, all of it?

(l)user: yes, totally gone.

me: I'll advise DARPA, they will want to speak to you.

not everyone is technically inclined, or cares to be. DVD players sell well because they are simple to operate. Imagine you had to boot up to a prompt then type in bash commands to mount /dev/dvd0, then download a codec, and try run a video player. No, they just put it in and push play. Yes, some of the "Security" is sacrificed (eg: no enforced age restrictions), but its simple and thats what sells. The same for PC's. People dont want to be programmers / techno heads.

They just want to use the thing. With as little techno geek speak as possible. Sometimes it is a dangerous thing, but its certainly easier to use and operate than something thats fantastically powerful, but way too complex for your grandmother
