you guys are playing around with the wrong triangle.

another experiment

lean your bike against the wall with the saddle and handlebars touching the wall.

next put your foot on the crank closest to the bb

apply pressure and see the frame bend towards the wall at the bottom end. this is the kind of flex you experience when you jump in a race and sprint or climb and actually have enough power in your legs to ride up a hill with power without dying halfway.

Alu has more flex than a ti frame

ti is thus more responsive based on the rigidity of the ride and has the added advantage of being extremely light

carbon will also be very stiff and light

save yourself some money and buy alu or get a bond and go ti

?

The experiment found that the 25 riders that took part in the test could not tell the difference between different masked road frames made of ti' date=' carbon, alu and steel fitted with the same wheels & components. When asked to give the frames a comfort rating from 1-5, the average rating differed very little, from 2.3 to 2.7 The frame they rated with the best comfort was an oversize aluminium frame.

?

Bottom line is that the effect of frame material on ride quality is so small it is not detectable by human senses.?

maybe it is all just marketing hype and we should go back to riding 501 zini's ;-)

Oi, lots of suspect stuff flloating around here:

"The elastic modulus of aluminium is the lowest and this means the least amount of energy is stored in flexed tubes on the frame when under load."

No, Young's Modulus and ability to stored energy is not directly related.

"Alu has more flex than a ti frame....ti is thus more responsive based on the rigidity of the ride "

Very very wrong, "flex" not dependant on material.

"....has the added advantage of being extremely light...carbon will also be very stiff and light"

Weigh also not dependant on frame material. A Ti or carbon frame can be very can be heavy. Both can be very flexible & ride like noodles.

If riding a Zini blows your hair back, why not? It is in the bike companies' best interest to convince us that old bikes are no good. It seems as if their marketing strategies are hugely succesful.

Imo if you are paying for it, ride whatever puts a smile on your face Smile
