Hi guys new to site looking forward to gaining some knowledge and advice

Looking for some advice before getting a Mountain bike for my wife and I

We are casual newbie riders looking to ride for enjoyment and fitness/exercise

My wife is pretty set on the silverback reno and to me it looks a pretty good value for money entry level bike any comments on this bike or equivalent models in its pricerange would be gladly appreciated.

I have looked at so many bikes for myself and cant decide I will tend to ride harder/rougher terrain than my wife who will and is very conservative rider and will prob crash alot if history is anything to go by.

I have not ridden for a long time time now but would like a bike that I can mess about on etc without it dropping apart

I was looking at a mongoose tyax elite then saw the otero elite with the dual suspension but I also like the silverback phoenix and today looked at the dakota

Any advice would be great esp on if getting a dual susp is worth it or sticking with a hardtail

I except these are entry level and will have their limitations but I dont want to spend 20k plus on a bike when I am starting out.

If the bug really bites I can upgrade in a year or so

cheers

For your wife I would say go one up from entry level and for yourself one up from your wife's bike. Buy to a cheap bike and you will have to replace parts on it in no time. Hope this helps.

BTW: Welcome to the HUB and beware it is addictive. You will learn a lot here and you will have fun here.

Firstly, welcome to the cycling world!

Dual susp is more comfortable, but costs more. Hardtails will get you anywhere a dual susp will. You will just be a little more shaken up when you arrive.

The entry level gears on mtb's are exactly that- if you can, try get deore or better.

If you are not yet sure where you want to go with your cycling - try a hardtail - before overcommitting on the finances.

My wife has the Reno and I have the Phoenix. We are not serious MTBers so they are more than good enough for our use.

If you intend to ride fairly often and do some rough stuff then you should maybe look at a bike 1 level up.

As Mudda said, first try the hardtail before splashing out on the DS. Make sure it is something you want to do before spending the big bucks. If you buy an MTB with a farly good gruppo on to start with, then you can just upgrade the frame later if you want to go DS.

You get great value for money on old Giant Anthems at this moment. Even the AnthemX2 sells for R16k and is bang for buck. It gives you a nice riding position and ample travel.

After being in the bike analysis phase for months, at the end it comes down to looks, budget and how you want to define yourself (or bike). :-)

Welcome and enjoy.

Thanks for the replys and help

After lots more shopping chatting and many more hours of reading I got the Silverback Dakota it just fell into what I wanted to spend had a pretty nice spec for the price

Collected it today only got to ride for 30 mins this afternoon but first impressions of the bike are really good I am happy with the front shock the weight is pretty good didnt hammer the brakes as want to bed them in shifting was good and I really like the bike and that is what counts the most I suppose.

Only negative is how unfit I amBig%20smile but lots of riding should soon fix that

Cheers

Oh yes and I never fell off Wink
