Tubes 20inch

Deep Section

Recommended Posts

I did a conversion for someone over the weekend and we used Schrader valves. I did some deep thinking and when the smoke cleared' date=' came to the conclusion that tubeless conversions are a very good reason to go to Schrader. The valves can always be screwed out, they can be purchased anywhere in the world for next to nothing, the valve tool is freely available and the stem is thick enough to pour the goo in through a funnel.

What's the obsession with Presta then?

Its lighter...

Perhaps they don't want to drill their rim wider?

?

Jules' date=' like I said, I did DEEP thinking. I thought of that too. What's the big deal with that? 70% (a purely made-up statistic) of sub R15k mountain bikes come with Schrader valves in anyway.

?

On my bike, I drilled the inside wall of the rim bigger than a Presta strictly requires, so that I can get rid of that silly bulge and have the valve seat deeper and evenly.

Johan, does that mean you're running presta tubes? ;)

I think some people might be nervous to drill the rim because it'll almost certainly void the warranty. I bought the Mavic wheels with the plastic inserts (which I've never used).

Ja, I'm running Presta, but my reason for Presta comes back from the 1980s when I once bought a few tubes only to get home and discover they're incompatible with my pumps. I then "Standardised" on Presta and I suppose it became a bit of a snob thing not having car valves on my bike.

But now that I'm older and have done some deep thinking, I think the obsession is silly.

As for voiding the gaurantee. Like hell. They (the reluctant gaurantor) first has to prove that the rim failed because of the hole. That is easy to determine: if it broke at a place other than the hole, it wasn't the hole. Even lawyers will understand that.

And of course you just get guys like me who just like the look of the presta valve a lot more..

shallow... I know, but when you are slow and are always at the back, you need to have some style... or at least think you have...

JB's reasoning is excellent and should be used by all.. because it makes sense. My obsession with presta is... yes I think it looks better, but mainly because presta was always high end and schrader was for the poor boys who couldnt afford anything else when I was growing up, light years ago... and of course they had to go to the garage to pump tyres...Wink
