Hi guys and girls

I have been offered this Mongoose  Teocali Comp not sure what year it is it hasnt done very much off road work and seen one trail the guy is asking R8000.00 negotiable what does everyone think

It is this or a new Mongoose Otero Elite for about the same price

Any suggestions I am a noob and currently riding a Raleigh M Trax so right now anything is an upgrade20090420_135023_P1000491.JPG

The Teocali for sure. They're not even almost in the same league. The Comp is pretty entry-level, but it's WAY better than the Otero.

I'm not sure about the amount of riding though. Judging from the scratches on the barends it's scraped along the ground once at least. And the fork looks like the colour on the stanchions is coming off - not really a bad thing as long is they're not scratched, but it looks pretty well used.

Would any one suggest I rather take the R 8K and go buy a hardtail for the same amount of money

and what would make the Teocali better then the Otero is it all to do with the sets shocks etc...

+1 for the Teocali there! I dont know what spec that bike in the pic has, but I can vouch for the Teocali. It's an awesome all round bike. Very strong and light enough to push up a hill.

The only thing that TOTALLY SUCKS about the bike in that pic are those bar ends dude. They are sooooo wrong in so many ways. Bar ends do not belong on riser bars.

8 grand is a a good price for that though, and you can always upgrade.

oh, and that coil shock isnt standard AFAIK. You might want to upgrade that for a plush tweaky Fox for better trail hugging.

cheers

1st thing AFAIK ????

2nd what should have been standard shocks and why would someone consider changing them or would have changed them.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions on which way to go with this

AFAIK=as far as I know

For that year of Teocali the shock was a Rockshox MC1 I think. you can google the diffs if you like, or if someone here cares to explain. I have to work Wink

Ok so I have just been given some disturbing news and want to get a bit of a better idea on how true or untrue it is a mate just told me he heared that the Mongoose are not very strong frames and there have been a few cases where mongoose has refused to replace or other on broken frames... is there any truth to this matter or has anyone heared of anything like this

The pre-2008 Canaan had frame issues, and the warranty is not transferable to the second owner. I haven't heard of any issues with Teocali frames.

FWIW, my Meteore Comp frame has been perfect the last 2+ years. It even survived the dirt jumps in Mealstrohm at Logwood, which anyone that has ridden them will know where not very smooth. The frame has actually outlasted 2 forks already.

I have two mates with 08 Teocali's and one with 08 Canaan none of them have had any problems.

The two with Teocali's have also thrashed them around logwood and the bike park,

Ok so basically right now with all the input I have received the Teocali seems to be the formidable answer hands down, (inspection permitting)

Does anyone still think I should rather take the R8k and get me a hard tail or perhaps someone out there thinks they have a deal which could beat this let me know please.

Actually I think that'll be the best 'bang for the buck' option.

For R8k you should be able to get a used hardtail with a decent fork and better components.

Anything would be better that the MTrax Smile, As hog says a hardtail will probably have better components and be lighter than the Teocali. Depends on the type of riding you want to do or if you plan on upgrading Teocali at a later stage?  Goldmember2009-04-21 05:39:40

Oh yes anything would be better then the M trax, but it has served me fairly well thus far.

As for the weight situation I have never been very worried about the weight of items (I have been on a tank Mtrax for the past year and never noticed the difference)

and as for the style of riding I want to do I will be honest and say I only really started to enjoy the Mountain bike when I found and rode the Reitvlei course and for me the touring or rides between obsticles seem like work where down hill and tech is a lot more interesting and keeps my mind busy so I would say I like busy courses.

Then I would say go for the Teocali as you will have more rear and front shock travel than the Mtrax and a hardtail over obstacles.

Other opinions??
