I will be building a track bike to race and need to get hold of a crank and sprockets and a chain.

There seems to be a few different standards ,and BCD's etc 1/8" and 3/32" etc is confusing when you don't know what you need.

Are there rules regarding gearing? I think I'll need a 170mm crank. But don't know what size chainring to get...

Also I need to make sure the BCD I get is compatible with Locally available chainrings in case I need different sizes.

Anyone know what they are talking about here that can help?

tarmac,I just went through the same process:

For track use (as oppose to just fixie riding) get 165mm cranks - you need the clearance on the steeper slopes with the shorter cranks.

BCD - 144 is most common although there are different sizing i.e. 135, 130 etc. So be carefull to choose blades to suit your cranks

track cogs/ blades are 1/8". So unless you run road blades and a 3/32" cog, rather stick to the standard 1/8" setup.

BTW If your chain is 1/8" apparently you can still run 3/32" blades and cogs, but not other way round (just make sure BCD comply to cranks)

Also chain line is important - road cranks will place your chain in a different line than a track crank will do, so rather stick to track cranks and rear hubs

I found a Sungino crankset + blade at Wiseman in dbn for only R250 on Saterday!!!

A very profound statement I got: Track bikes don't have much equipment on it, but what is there is very critical so you don't lose teeth!!!

Ok so this project is now off the ground with the the Hub Track series around the corner I need to get it sorted asap!

I have a Specialized Langster S-Works Frame, with Carbon Fork.

Pro RC50 Front Wheel - my road front

Truvativ Touro Crank and Shimano BB - Dave Wiseman

Specialized Profit Stem 100mm - Take off from my road bike

I have some bars... and tape is on it's way... thanks Solomons.

Now all I need is a saddle and a chain and rear sprockets... getting those soon!

Yo tarmac

Have you seen the cool specials CWC have on their Prologo Saddles!!!

A White/Red one would look so awesome with that bike of yours!!

Damn I think I missed the courier for that, but luckily Bridge cycles have a few bits going there tonight to get chain and cogs.
