Hi,

I've been considering getting me a MTB, but do not know wot is out there and wot is decent, and wot is a decent price, etc.

Can anyone give/point me to some info?

Thx

It all depend how serious you want to be. To be competitive involves some spending to get a light bike. Then there is the never ending issue of hard vs soft tail. You start looking for a mildly competitive hard tail at around R13000 and hard tail at R18000 or so. At that price you should get a bike with xt components (second best in Shimano range). Then things like air forks out class a coil fork by a mile.

thx for the replies....

budget-wise....i would reckon i was thinking 7k 2nd hand (hope it's reasonable). wot this would get me is something i have no idea of

kind of riding....not sure wot u mean here....isnt off-road off-road? lol

i basically wanna MTB to supplement the road riding.

do i want a competitive bike? not really, even tho i am a competitive person

Oh bliksem! Brace yourself!

Is this a joke? You're an Champion Hubber, surely you know what you've just done to yourself :-)

What is your budget and what does an average mountain bike trip constitute in your mind? (i.e. wet or dry, long or short distance, high or low drop offs)?

I would be careful of that statement - I know of quite a lot of competitive guys who prefer coils...

The problem with coil is that your 'cheap' forks are all coil - that throws a shadow over the entire range. Much like the stigma around Raleigh - they make good bikes, but because of the Game range, people sometimes tend to not give it its worth.

@Borriz .... as stated, budget was thinking R7k for 2nd hand. i'm up for all terrains for MTB'ing i.e. gravel, sand, wet, dry, crossing streams, single track. distances....i cant say....depends on the terrain

Indeed. I run a coil fork, and it's the berries. But it's a Fox, so I'd expect no less...

If I were me, I'd get an On-One 456 frame from Kiwi, and a 2nd hand bike with a decent fork (travel adjustable if possible, otherwise 100 - 120mm travel) and wheelset to strip for parts. Build up the 456 and sell the other frame. Then you've got a singletrack carving machine that's light enough to race if you want to, and with some careful shopping you might just make it on budget.

for recreational purposes, budget, and because you're competitive I would say hard tail!

For R7k you can scrape in with a new bike. The second hand one would be better speced but with bit of damage.

Droo's post might be on the money if you're willing to wait for that second hand bike bargain to disassemble.
