I have been unable to load more than one route on my Garmin 705 GPS, have to take a laptop with me if I go away for a few days, it would be nice to load a number of routes in the unit and then just select which route to ride.

Loading routes onto the USB card also doesn't help, the unit can't read from the data card.

Any idea's on how to overcome this problem?

Data Recording: Press menu/select settings/data recording.

Smart recording/reset the timer every 12 hours.

Every second recording/reset the timer every 4 hours.

Are you sure about this? I've had no problems reading routes, tracks and maps from my 1GB SD card. What firmware are you using?

There was a firmware update that allowed files of over 4hrs. Theoretically, the only thing limiting recording now is battery life and onboard memory.

Battery life is around 15hrs (IIRC). Using 1s recording with power, speed, cadence, altitude and GPS this would give a file around 28MB in size.

If you shove everything you can onto the SD card and find a way to charge the battery, you could record around 200hrs before running out of onboard memory.
