As per title:

Just spent 2 hours on my sons crappy chain store bike. He is 2 and its his first, was bought for him by some good friends so I cannot trash it.

Gosh, I hate these bikes. No scewers, just old fashioned nuts .... aaarggghhh. And then trying to set the brakes is a nightmare.

I hope my son leaves it outside tomorrow night LOL

Word of advice: No matter how cute the Spiderman bike looks at Game, don't buy it

My son also has one of these. He is 9 now and we have had it for about 5 years,

Very basic, was used by my daughter when she was smaller.

Allow him to leave that bike out and ride it around the yard, He also has a XS Silverback which we use for races and which is locked away. We don.t worry about the Makro bike however his good bike gets cleaned after every race and the chain gets lubed. On Sunday while I was doing the Hill2Hill race I let him take his chain store bike where he was waiting at the finish for me with my wife as I wasn't worried if it got stolen or if something happened to it. While I was doing the 40km race I believe that he won the kids 2km race. After this I thought that there was some purpose for these bikes although as you say they have no gears and it is very difficult to adjust or remove wheels etc.

This is how bikes worked before they became "modern"...... it was the standard with all bikes for all cyclists all around the world............... and still is for the greatest percentage of cyclists outside your enclave. If you are patient and not driven by your yuppie urges and frustrations these bikes can easily be set up to work very well.

........... or you can have the guts to junk the bike and buy him something grossly expensive that his limited skills does not justify....... why......... that sounds like the carbon framed bikes ridden by cyclists with boeps you see every day!!!!!!!!!

..... and respect your origins as a cyclist!!!!!!

cbrundson -- i'm long out of the 2yr old bike market - but on a recent trip to the Drakensberg, I saw these two hooligans having absolute fun on these bikes. They looked very sturdy, and definitely stood being (ab)used by these two

Picked up one of those that was lying on a client's lawn a while ago, just about put my back out . The bloody thing is about 5 times the weight of my P2!! Mind you,  in a previous life that bike was probably an anvil
