So the girlfriend wants to join me with mountain biking - i promised her that i will take her to do a trail and see if she really likes it and she did (or that is what she tells me)

Now the question - I need to buy her a bike now but i have a very limited budget. I looked at the Avalanche atx250 but after what a few people told me i am not considering it anymore.

The other bike that i am looking now at is the Silverback Oakland 2010 model - and a few people told me this is a good entry level bike and it fits mu budget.

Let her make the final decision. Having been there a few years back I learnt that the look of the bike is a more important consideration than it should be. A nice looking bike that does the job will get ridden more than a bike with fancier components that was a good deal. More than enough time later on to upgrade as long as it is ridden.

yeah i can second that the looks is more important to her. She checks out a bike and then already decide the color scheme of her cycling gear ... it seems that she likes Merida ... the very expensive one LOL

No ways will it be a waste of money! I started on a Oakland and still use it two years later as my commuter bike, I love riding it! It'll be more than adequate for someone starting off and will easily do the job... if she likes it then buy it before she sees something that you'll have to sell a kidney for.
