Why do some 10spd cassttes require a spacer behind the cluster?

I have an Ultegra cluster on my training wheels. When I wanted to replace it with a 105 cassette I had to put the spacer in behind the cassette so that the lockring could pull the sprockets up tightly.

Are the spacings between the sprockets not all the same?Confused

I thought that all 10-speed cassettes (shimano) fitted to 9-speed hubs required the spacer and that it was only some Dura-Ace hubs are 10-speed specific.

I think that, almost, all shimano road hubs care compatible with 8, 9, and 10 speed cassettes.

JB will be along (hopefully) with the definitive answer.

If your cassette is a CS7800, 6600, 5600 and you are not using one of the original SHIMANO 10spd hubs with aluminium freehub that has deeper splines then you have to use the spacer supplied! They went back to conventional splines with Ti freehub bodies shortly after introducing the alloy ones. Not sure if new Dura Ace and Ultegra are the same will followup on that!
