Which MTB?

I'm quite new to the MTB community, but for the few times have been out with friends, I just loved it.

 

I'm now thinking on getting me a decent MTB (Hard Tail) but still in the process of looking and shopping.

 

I would like to have your views or opinions on MTBs, groupsets, shocks, etc.

 

My budget would be something around +-R8k-R10k. What MTB would you recommend in this price range?

 

Thus far I have seen a nice Merida and a KHS. Not 100% sure which model. The KHS was alite 3000 but was over R10k.

 

Which is better? Shimano XT or Sram X-9?

 

Anything else I need to know, please feel free to comment.

What kind of riding do you want to do?

Not sure what you call it (think cross country). Did some riding at Northern farms, Groenkloof and Van Ghalen (all in Gauteng).
