MTB Tandem brakes..

Any suggestions on what brakes to use? Currently running Avid Juicy 5's with 8 inch rotors. Havn't ridden it yet. Just wondering if it will work, and if it will last with the extra load?! smileys/smiley24.gif

Avid juicy 5 will do but with a 8" rotor you will need a 20mm through axle on the fork. Most fork manufacturers do not guarantee their forks with 8" rotors. There is a possibility that the normal skewered axle may fail. The stresses placed on the skewer can cause failure of the skewer.

What type of fork are you using??? We have a Marzocchi FR series Bomber Wedge with a skewer but use Avid Arch Rival V-brakes. Combined with the wide braking surface Sun Mammoth downhill rims we have almost disk braking capabilities. We are very happy with the combination. The best fork option is the Maverick DUC 35. Very light and tandem rated. It is expensive though and you need special Maverick 23mm axle hubs.

If you have a 20mm through axle type fork you may look at the following disk brakes:-

Magura Gustav (these are the best and are tandem rated)

Hope four pot or six pot

Avid Juicy 7

Remember everything needs to be so much more stronger on a MTB Tandem.

Go and look at Chris Timms website regarding choices at the following link http://tandem-fahren.de/Mitglieder/Christoph_Timm/DiskFAQ.ht ml The following site is also helpfull:- http://www.mtbtandems.com/

What type tandem and specs do you have ???

Please contact again if you have other questions.

Cannondale, Using a Rockshox Pike through axle fork. DT hub at the rear. Only problem is the front hub. Cant find a 40 hole through axle hub. So are using a 32 hole hub with a DH rim. Rest of the specs are a mix of Sram X9 and X0. Any recomendations on the tyres?

We use Continental Gravity 26 X 2.3. We have only used them on the dry and rough with loose gravel Mozambique roads. Used them a few times after rain but not in mud yet. Would not know how they would handle in sand.

Just explain the through axle fork. Is it a 20 mm fork???? Our combination is DRC Revolver 6 hole disk 36 hole sealed bearing hubs with DT competition spokes on the Sun Mammoth rims. Gunproof and strong!!!!!!! We are a heavy team in excess of 180kg's. We do not cycle aggressively. Contact Eben at Westrandcycles in JHB. tel no 011 - 475 5080.

All above are 36 hole 20mm hubs.

Go and look on the www.chainreactioncycles.com website for 20 mm axle option. I think you will find White industries hubs in 40 to 48 hole hubs. Horrendously expensive!!!!!!!

It is a 20mm fork 140 mm travel. Woodman sealed hub at the front. Combined rider weight = 160. I'll ride stoker so my biggest concern is the brakes. I'm used to racing tandem on the road,so I know exactly what it's capable of. Cant get used to the idea of traveling at that speed on techical decents!

Think of getting a Cane Creek Thudbuster rear seat post. M has one and she loves it. Almost makes a dual suspension out of a hardtail!!!!!

A single crown fork WILL distort, even with a 20mm axle, under heavy braking. It will be less than a skewered axle but for aggressive riding a double crown fork is a neccesity. Disk braking just aggravates the distortion. Never ver use a disk brake as a drg brake on the tandem. Fit an Arai drum brake if you need more stopping power.

Off road tandem cycling differs a lot from road tandem cycling and takes place in a much slower environment. The Hope Mono 6 Disks or Magura Gustavs is your only option.
