Hi guys, I just bough a secondhand MTB is in great shape, was this the right thing to do... People tend to ask why did you go second hand? I'm not an experienced MT Biker and will probably go secondhand when I upgrade again.. Is this the right route?

Well it depends really?

You will always get more bang for your buck buying second hand, but to buy a new bike is like to buy a new car. Its just special!

If you have decent components now, maybe only buy a new frame next, then start again with upgrading your components!

It is probably not a great bike that I bought eigther but I am sure that it will be fine for  the starting phases of MTB'ing... I used to ride a Canondale R900 racer and swiched to MTB'ing for a bit more of a thrill.... The new bike is a Trek 4500... Do anyone know for how much they usually go...?

How do you decide how much to sell a second hand bike for.

If you buy a bike new say for R6k, and sell it say, a year or 2 later would you sell it at half?

Just a generalisation here please - I know it depends what upgrades you did on the bike, the mileage etc, but I give you specs of a second hand bike and you say should be about 3K - how do you know? And how do i know if Im getting ripped off or not?

also it depends on where you sell it. In the junk mail and gumtree you could possibly get about half, maybe more.

if you sell on the hub, you will get less than 50%, hubbers drive bargains.

haha, no - jocks i want new, all the time every time!!

So what would you choose - assuming someone has told you the specs of the bikes are pretty much the same...

Brand new bike for 3500 or second hand for 3000?

if i was patient - I would look for a better second hand one at R3500. Most guys will say they want R4000 - but you can bargain them a bit down.

This is my new "secondhand" bike that I picked up on gumtree... Shimano deore groupset, Judy Rockshock, Bontranger Tires, Rims and handles.. Not as glamorous as the bikes I usually see on the hub but my first MTB in years and it rides like a dream...
