any advantages to road shoes?

road shoes and pedals with their cleats have only one advantage over mTB shoes and pedals with their cleats; surface area.

road pedals don;t have to worry about mud clearance so the platform is flat and large.

However, this advantage is largely negated by stiff soled MTB shoes that are set up to engage with the pedal correctly i.e. the shoe sole lugs should contact the pedal.

If you have a MTB and road bike then this set up has several benefits in turns of bike set up and achieving correct fit. The stiff soled shoes act as  a large contact platform anyway hence there is no benefit to the larger area of the pedal.
