Hello All,

Hopefully there might be an Enlightened Shimano-user [i know that not everyone agrees that people who insist on using Shimano are enlightened - but we'll ignore that for now Wink] out there who can briefly explain the difference in the model numbers for Shimano components...

I've tried to work it out on the CRC website, with not much luck.

And surprisingly, the Shimano website is not much more helpful.

I'll list some model ranges to explain what I'm getting at:

Brake levers: [XTR M950 & XTR M970]

Brakes: [XTR M960 & M970]

Disc Brakes: [XT M765 & M766]

Cassette: [XT M750 & M760] [XTR M950, M960, M970]

What the hell is the difference between say a 950, a 960 or a 970?

Or a M765 and a M766?

Are there levels of products within the XT/XTR range? Is a M970 better than a M950?

Because prices do not necessarily support that view?

Or is the M
linked to the model year? Is a M950 older than a M970?

I am looking at upgrading some parts - and would like to get some clarity on this before buying...

Thanks!

Since all the "enlightened" hubbers left in the Great Exodus I will try to fullfill that role. Please PM if you need more help.

Rod Ti are you importing IE buying on the Internet or shopping at your LBS. If the first you have to do some research as to what you are buying. Exchanging items can be very costly if you order incorrectly. The link below is to the different ranges or Shimano MTB components ie XTR, XT etc.

On the link below is the one I followed for XTR. In red with the thumbnails you can see the different component numbers. Read up here and compare. Make sure you understand and then oreder.

If you buy from an LBS you can use their expert knowledge to advise you but at the cost they sell the components for.

Hope this helps.

Steve, you seem to know. Does Shimano make a "outboard" bearing MTB and Road Tandem Crankset. Out MTB has a ISIS splined Hollowtec (one) MTB tandem Crankset. I want to upgrade the Road Tandem at a later stage, I do know there is a nine speed Ultegra with square taper BB's available. They are advertised in the USA for $195-00 without BB's.

I have been working with Shimano for over 15 years, unfortunatly the only Tandem equipement made by Shimano was XT and production was stopped some years ago. We still have a few Sugino sets available but with standard chainrings so pickup when changing gears will be poor and the ratio is 28 38 48 which isnt what is required today. Perhaps we can convert these for you to accept Shimano chainrings as the bb is for the tapered square(old) type. I will get back to you tommorow nite.

Steven, the Sugino cranks were extremely good. They were used on Cannondale Tandems. I am perfectly happy with the Shimano Hollowcrank (1) MTB Crankset on the MTB Tandem. What I actually want to do is to upgrade the Road Tandem. I want to make use of "new" technology by using outboard bearings that are the current standard. The Truvativ Elita (I think) tandem cranks are an example. It seems from what you say that Shimano does not cater for Tandem Drivetrains anymore. Why if I may ask ?????? There surely is an growing market and it would be easy to make up an Ultegra set for example with Three Spiders and crank. Not sure how the rear drive will work?????? With two oopising spiders. Seems to em trhat I will have to go for Truvativ/SRAM here. Thanx for the help.
