I have been MTB'ing for a year or so and decided to take up road cycling as well. Bought a Raleigh RC3000 last year and only managed a couple of training rides before I broke my foot.

Luckily I have lost the moonboot and can now train again. I had a short ride last weekend and a couple of spinning sessions during the week. The foot seems good except for unclipping from the pedals. The twist needed to unclip is still tender.

Anyway I digress. Went for a longer ride on Sunday morning heading out west down Hendrick Potgieter then past Avionto, right at Kloofzicht, right at Beyers Naude, right at Peter Road, left back onto Hendrick Potgieter and the finally left up Chirstiaan De Wet....needless to say there are a few climbs on this route.

What I have noticed is that I am struggling to climb as my cadence drops down to a minimum and my legs want to fall off. I obviously miss the granny gear on my MTB.

The bike has a nine speed 12-23 cassette. Would I gain any benefit by fitting a 10 speed 12-25 cassette? And if so would I need to change shifters? I have the standard Shimano Tiagra shifters.

Any other adivce would be appreciated.

That'll put plenty climb on your rear wheel... If you can find one... and if your deraileur will cope with a 27 tooth at the back... and you'll need a new chain...

But 9 speed 12 - 27 will be a good option.
