Hello,

I have a Merida 96 3000-D with Magura Louise Brakes as std kit to this bike, I want to change to Shimano XT brakes as I have what I think is needed to do the change( brake levers, calipers with pads, brake housing thats bleed).

What I would like to know from you fundies , can I mount these XT brake calipers straight onto the Magura mounts that come standard with this bike? Also would it be better to change the Magura 6 bolt rotors(180 mm) to Shimano 6 bolt rotors? I am very dump with these things. Thanks in advance for the help !

Hi baie sukkle

I have Hayes stroker carbon brakes mounted directly to the fork no issues apart from the standard disc brake problems of alignment etc.

I am running shimano rotors on the centre lock system much better if you ask me.

You have XT hubs on that bike so the hub should be able to take the centre lock no problems.

Just one question why dump the maguras they are lovely brakes I didnt have a choice on my setup as my bike was heavily modfied when I got it, but if i had had a choice I would have gone with the maguras

Hi Baie Sukkel

You will be able to mount the XT calipers on to the same mounts, and you can use the same rotors , however, I can offer you a pair of Shimano XT six bolt rotors (160 &180) in almost brand new condition for R400 for both. Only covered about 150 tarmac k's. I have recently replaced my Strokers with XT on my Merida, and kept the stroker rotors, but performance was a little bit compromised. I then decided to fit XT rotors, which made a big difference. I then finally received my new XT rotors (half alu, half stainless from CRC), therefore my standard XT's are for sale. Stick to XT, you will not regret.

I have XT brakes on my other Merida( FLX5000) and I prefere the feel of the XT to the Magura,I suppose it boils down to preferanceWink. I have got a complete XT spares brake kit, so it will not cost me anything to try it out.

Yup it is all personal choice. I know the XT brakes are also light and have great modulation, my theory is when you start playing in the top end of the market then it is all down to personal preferences.

Why change the maguras? Great brakes, only downside is that they have left the country and pads for louise now costs R400 from LBS!!! didnt have time to import from CRC.
