Looking for a Franschhoek (Stellenbosch) to Cape Town route.

Hi,

 

Looking for a road-route from Franschhoek to Cape Town, any ideas? Ideally I'd like to have as much shoulder as possible, and get there alive. From what I can figure out on Google Maps, there are two routes in. Either (from what I can make out perusing Street View):

 

1. M12 - Road is the better of the two, but goes through rougher parts of CPT.

2. R45 - Road of death?

 

Would value any input.

I've cycled from Southern Suburbs to stellenbosch and back. We went out along the R102 (Voortrekker Road) from Woodstock all the way past Bellville until Kuilsriver, then turned off onto the M12 (Polkadraai) to get to Stellenbosch.
