Speaking of Ralphs - I replaced a rear tire in a hurry and see that it is the "wrong" way around i.e. it now rolls like the front tire would. I don't want to change it (Stans mess etc) if it doesn't make a real difference, but it does feel like it is less grippy up steep climbs and rocky sections. It could also be that I am running it with more PSI than usual after installing the new tire. Should I change it around?

the nobby's are angled in such a way that they will either give more drive or more control depending on the direction they are rolled.

it is very important that you face the tyre in the correct direction for its purpose.

 

dropping the PSI will put more tyre in contact with the ground and you will experience better grip - but for optimal performance have your tyre turned the "right" way round

 

take it to your LBS, let them get dirty Wink

The New Racing Ralph's sound good, I'm going to try them some time. But this Furious Fred I don't know if that's such a good idea, sure they'll sell like hot cakes for the fist few months and to lesser experianced riders, but they gonna get a bad rap once ppl start having blow-outs.

Sorry for being so negative but I've tried a few Sub 400g tyres and it always turn out the same way, it's a waste of money imho, but I'll be keeping my eyes on them.

 

When will the new tyres be availible in SA?

the HP Folding is rated from 6 to 10 bar, the tubular version from 8 to 14 bar.

 

keep in mind that tyres were initially invented to absorb shock from the road surface -  the original bikes had steel hoops only. Very noisy and very hard on the body. They also allow for better control - steering etc.

 

I am sure you will agree that our road surface is really rough and that Europeans have it a little easier than we do.

The harder you pump your tyres, the less (shock absorbtion) comfort you will have when you ride.

Also there is no significant performance increase above 8 bar.

Harder isn't always better.

I agree, the Furious Fred would not be suited to every rider. More especially their use is very limited to Dry and non technical terrain.

The ideal Race would be the Crater Cruise and some stages of the EPIC.

 

The Furious Fred, New Racing Ralph and Nobby nic make up the Schwalbe 3-Tyre Race system. Choosing which tyre or combination of tyres depends on the ddepnds on the wether the conditions are dry, mixed or wet and the terrain is Smooth, combination or rough. Most of us would get by with a Racing Ralph on the front and the rear.

 

The only person Really, REALLY excited about the Furious Fred is JP Pearton. He is a very strange boy who rides a rigid pace fork.

Methinks he may have fallen off his bike a few too many times with out a helmet. LOL

That Furious Fred would work on Karoo 2 Coast as well, you'll just need to nurse it over the first mountain.

The life span of a tire has a lot to do with your riding style. I've see a guy go through the Transalp Challenge on a rigid mtb riding a set of Conti Town & Countries (grooved slicks) Clown.

yess, JP Pearton, I?m familiar with him and his Rigid fork ?weight weenie supreme" ? that said, Rigid fork and super light tyre, sjoe, that?s a accident waiting to happen:-P

but thx for the clarification, I can see it working for flat none technical stages.
