Coenie - it is something that the PPA funrides does not offer at this moment in time but maybe some day they will.

From what I have seen posted is if you join PPA your previous results will be shown if I have read this thread correctly - I thinks that pretty generous of PPA if that the case - this could be likened to your option to pay more for a temp number - which just then becomes a permanent seeded number and allows you to ride in groups of similar ability!

I have work to do now!

I have no need to go there, why should I. I also have a right that sinse I paid my membership to complain about how things are done.

It is up to PPA to listen, not up to me to go there and make the change? Why can you not make the change?

You like to complain, but you don't want to get the facts first. Hmmmmmm. Don't you think that's a bit unfair? :)

The Pedal Power Association is fortunate to annually receive profits from the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. While some of the profits received is retained to run the Association and support cycling and specifically the 60-odd funrides on the annual PPA funride calendar, the majority of profits received is allocated to cycling-related projects. So, where does the money go? Read on...

I stopped reading here, so ONLY partial money from the Argus goes to projects? Where does all the other money go? It might be further down the page but why is it that no-one can say something good about the PPA without refering to the website.

If anyone reads all that jargon please tell me does it sound like guilt funding and does it make my commute to work safer not just for myself but many other cyclists????

From the first paragraph:

".... some of the profits received is retained to run the Association and support cycling and specifically the 60-odd funrides on the annual PPA funride calendar"

"the majority of profits received is allocated to cycling-related projects."

There. All accounted for. What else should it go for?

Handing out helmets and red back lights to commuters who cycle to work and back in the dark and can't afford to buy their own? Oh wait, they've already done that.

Having bumper stickers printed and given to each Argus entrant to raise awareness for cycling safety? Also already been done. And it was a complete waste of money because hardly any of the cyclists used them.

You bright spark! Since ROAG is now questioning their existence for next year, why dont we get ROAG to take over from PPA or at least offer an Alternative?! I will gladly support anyone that is willing to kick PPA up the arse!

There aren't even enough volunteers for the PPA committee and you expect to get enough people and funds together to form another organisation to do everything that the PPA does? As great as it sounds, I'm afraid I don't see that happening. Its easier to moan on theHub.

Here is the reply I received from Racetec, hence the start of this topic.

Hi Elvin,   Unfortunately we are unable to publish your results as you are not a PPA member, as this race is a PPA event, you are required to be a PPA member if you would like your results to be displayed. Once you have joined PPA, please let us know and we will re-run results to enable you to view this on the website.

You may contact PPA at 021 689 8420 or info@pedalpower.org.za<mailto:info@pedalpower.org.za> or visit their website: www.pedalpower.co.za<http://www.pedalpower.co.za>

If you don't want to join PPA, buy yourself a speedo. You can get one for the price of a PPA membership. You record your time and you get a time. Voila! :) You compare your time with the results on racetec and see where you came in the alphabet soup. :)

Or you join PPA; get the benefits of membership and laugh at the idiots who aren't prepared to pay a 1000th of the amount they spend on their bike/kit/supplements every year and have to start at the back.

But I have to agree that the latest way of forcing one to be a PPA member is not on. If I did not join out of my own free will, but was forced to join in such a manner, I would have been just as upset

I don't see how PPA is forcing anyone to be a member. Why should PPA provide the benefits of membership to non-members?

Its a personal choice. Either join up and or don't. Surely everyone is grown up enough to make their own, informed decision?

hmm now you have opened a new discussion...because how would they get neww members...PPA is like that software you can download from the web...the "Free download" yes the download is free to use ...well you have to pay.

PAA says; come and ride your bike, start at the back etc...but if you want to see your time you have to join and you can not even join for one day you have to join for a year

Why is it that PPA never comments on this forum? If I had a bussiness / club and was blasted like this I would be here to defend myself....so they don't care?

I'm glad they aren't. I'd much rather that they attend to important stuff, like the stuff that's set out on the website but which some people are too comfortable to read, than monitor a website that has unfortunately degenerated into a playground for the comfortable people to sit on their backsides and complain.

Coenie - I don't believe their a problem for PPA event only offering timing to PPA members. PPA / the PPA event organizers pay the timing company to come and do the timing it not for free and it is a benefit to PPA members! CSA does not the timing company for PPA event!

I understand your point, but how do you know what is the wish of PPA members?

I as a PPA member want to have all the participants' time displayed, as a service and benefit to ME, to compare how I have performed against the whole field. What was the point otherwise of buying a chip, or even of timing the event for that matter?

What facts? PM if you think that I ammissing some facts or post it here. I have the facts, it happened to so your point is ?

Topwine - unfortunately PPA cannot please all the people all the time. I for one don't use my transponder when I am not fit to make my time is not displayed! Their is nothing that PPA can do about that at this moment in time which means your comparison against the whole field may always be in accurate.

That makes sense, does not help that on the website I was 1st in my age group but in real life I 10th

If you don't want to wear your chip, that's of course your own choice. But I don't think PPA has the right to make that choice for all of their members.

And please, tell us WHY PPA can not display at least all of those that chose to wear transponders?

Geez Louise! Will this thread never die?

Membership costs R250 pa.

That's considerably less than a single tank of fuel.

About the same as:

1. Entry level bike tyre...or

2. An OK meal out for you and a ladyperson...or

3. Most of a PowerBalance magical pixie dust bracelet...or

4. About 17 Gu sachets...or

5. One entry level cycling shoe

It's really not a lot of money.

MTFU, pay it over, see your results and stop whingeing you big girls' blouses!

Send me the R 250 and I will stop posting

I think you will find it is more about the principle than the money!

+ the same logic can be used on the timing issue

"Start timing all chip wearing participants already!!"

A very long time ago I used to be a member of a US-based motorcycling mailing list.

As you may or may not know, some US states require motorcyclists to wear a crash hat, and some don't. From time to time there would be an outbreak of internet fury over "principle". Most agreed that they should wear a crash hat, but objected "in principle" to being mandated to wear a crash hat.

Principle shminciple.
