Couple of Q's for the gurus out there

  •
  • What is the general feeling about these two shocks?
  • What would be the pros and cons of each and do each of them have specific applications?
  • The 2011 zula frames now come with the RP3 / Monarch(dunno what model)...why would they have changed this?

RP23 is a far more superior shock and more costly - that would be my call for the change. Either that or they (Morewood) don't think the average man on the street needs that much choise for their suspension...? Also may be a weight thing, I think Monarch is a little lighter.

The trick is in the numbers for thr RP range:

RP2 - 2 setting points for the suspension, namely platform on or gate open

RP3 - 3 settings, namely gate open or 2x platform settings

RP23 - now this is where it gets interesting. 2x gate settings and 3x platform settings, hence the 23 in the name. The gate settings are open (i.e fully active) or closed (i.e. platform on). Then you have the 3x platform settings, soft medium and hard.

I have the RP23 on my Shova and I generally don't use the shock to its full capacity, but i am a person who likes having the options. An RP3 would do just fine on a Zula. Either shock can be used for pretty much most bikes (A 6.7inch Trek Remedy has a RP23 for instance with a longer stroke), just as long as the correct length and shock stroke is used. Bigger bikes would benefit from something like the RP23 with boost valve or larger air can - these are available now (think the Remedy has the bigger can...?)

The Monach i have ridden on a Zula, and the only nice thing for me is that the gate setting is on or off - simple. Other than that I have heard a range of reports on the shock so best would be to test ride and decide what suits.

Hope that helps, if I have got anything wrong then please correct so that Rouxtjie is an inform oukie.
