I need to have the thread on my 1" steel steerer tube repaired, I took it to Link Engineering in Salt River and they were unable to do it. Or any engineering firms that you know of in the Cape? Contributions would be appreciated thank you.

If the thread is stripped, it cannot be repaired. It can only be chased i.e. dirt and paint removed.

 

If the bike is of historic significance, have a new steerer tube brazed in by Frans du Toit.

 

If the bike is of no historic significance, buy one of the very cheap and fine threadless 1 inch forks on the market. Every bike shop has such a fork they cannot get rid of. Then you can upgrade to threadless components and rid yourself forever from the dreaded thread.

I had mine done at Mark's Bicycle Workshop in Belville. My threads were slightly damaged, couldn't screw the headset on past a certain point. Mark chased them and the fork is as good as new now.
