Only done one so far, Thomas River, 46km half marathon, rolling with a couple of looooong hills, that get steep (ek se), 32x18 (cos I'm old), 2:33 on my old giant 26 with fat 2.4 killer bees (my beach tyres), make it so much comfier, and a thudbuster seatpost.

I was actually surprised at my strength up the hills, I matched the 3rd lady home for a while, until we got onto what was probably the only flat section of the race, and they left me behind, as I couldn't spin faster than about 120. I was surprised at the speed that I could work up on the downhills by tucking, so much so that I was catching the people that left me behind on the flats.

Very interresting as if you only have one gear.... what gear do you want?????

So take it you aren't SS riders then ???????

To X-plain then. An experienced SS rider will assess terrain and ability, and then swop out the rear gear - 16 tooth for flattish, 18-20+ for hilly to mountainous. Generally a 32 T chainring does the trick, but for flatter, faster track this can also be replaced with something bigger.

Most however will just climb aboard their trusty 32/16 and lever those bars.

Try it, you'll  it.
