Hi Good Day, I would like to know if anyone else experienced a mistake with their stage timing during the Wine2Whales Race ? I have nothing against Grevile, but this is not the first time this has happened to my Team ! If one teams result is in question then everyones times should be looked at. I think it is time to move away from manual timing, a chip cant make a mistake ! And i believe Racetec have started a good foundation. How do they do these stage timings in the rest of the world ?

Kind Regards,

Concerned Participant

Why not just raise your concerns with Grevile or the organisers? I'm sure they will be very accomodating.

I know from experiense that there are loads of problems with chip timing. I would rather trust manual timing.

The Epic use imported chips from Germany / Switzerland for a reason. Those Racetec chips are not foolproof.

I'd like to see better control during races as well as I've noted on some races participants take short cuts and claim faster times. On occasion I would report this and I'd get a "chill out dude, its not like they are racing for position" reply.

The difference between 30th and 33rd is not huge, but it still irks me when people are being dishonest.

I have done just that, but he is somewhere in joburg ! In the meanwhile the times get published and printed. The reason why i brought this to the Hub is because i did bring it to his attention on Sunday after the race and he told me he would sort it out, but then of course i am just a number in the race !

Saying the are not foolproof is maybe a bit rough. The implementation might just be misaligned... because the technology is proven.

I also had a mistake with my time. My team came through the finish together and they recorded us twice. They then added an hour penalty due to this mistake. Grevile said he would fix the time but nudda so far.

A tad misinformed, methinks.

All chips are imported. And whether from Germany/Switzerland or the US (such as Racetec use), it is of no importance. The technology is.

No chip is foolproof. Low frequency ones can interfere with each other, high frequency ones have a lower range, active ones can be picked up from further afield, but give problems when the battery runs low, passive ones cannot be picked up so far, but do not have battery problems. And so on.

The Racetec chips are passive RFID, whereas the Epic ones are active (they have a battery). So you are comparing apples and oranges. The Racetec chips would work fine for the Epic, but the active ones for a short duration, single event work better.

The Epic chips would be an absolute disaster if they were used in the environment the Racetec ones have the be used in...

Horses for courses and all that.
