Hi All,

I am looking at ordering stuff from CRC online but I see that there is Shimano XT components M770 and M771! CAn anybody please explain the difference between these?

Please also what is the diff between rapid rise and conventional with regards to the deraillers?

I have asked CRC but whiles waiting for an answer, maybe somebody local can advise?

I am doing an order within the next couple of days, although it will be more that R3000, if anybody requires something, I am keen to add it to my order.

Thank you,

Take it you are riding MTB, so unless you have calves like OS you need 770 - 44/32/22

Rapid rise vs conventional ! Ha.

Will explain it thus:

On conventional rear D one needs to PUSH the big lever on the shifter to move the chain from a small cog at rear to the next size up, and up and up. A gear change of this nature is generally done whilst you are climbing and the PUSH requires leverage that is often difficult to achieve when struggling up a hill. Rapid rise changes this. The small lever operates your upshift (on shimano you are able to flick forward or back, thumb or forefinger - rapidfire too)

and the big lever - PUSH - moves the D down the cluster, ie: a move made descending and accelerating. MUCH EASIER. Try it. You will love it.

Just remember, when setting up the D cable tension, the chain must be around the largest rear cog on the cluster -34, and smallest on the chainring- 22.

This should also be the position that you leave your gearing in when your bike is at rest. -_-

Thanks guys,

Thsi really helps! I now understand, that the option would then be M770 and rapid rise deraillers...anything that makes the 2011 ultra series a bit easier!!!

I also see that there is a XT rear D M772? Is this because its the long cage?

Thanks,

I use RapidRise, and absolutely love it... Paraphrasing what The Drongo said - with RR, the spring is tensioned so as to "help pull" the chain from the small to the big sprocket at the back. Conventional works the opposite way.

However - afaik - Shimano has finally pulled RapidRise from the new lines, citing lack of interest/up-take amongst the mtb fraternity. Riders apparently simply preferred the 'conventional' style, since they were familar with it, and didn't make the switch across to RapidRise... Keep that in mind when making future purchases, as whereas there will no doubt still be many available, it remains a 'technology' that is being phased out...

Me - as soon as I upgrade, I'm going to pick-up the newest RapidRise I can find off CRC... :P
