A friend, not on the hub, wants to change the groupset on his Raleigh tandem roadbike. He asked me for advice, but, I have no clue what to suggest. I have seen tandems with XT gruppo's and such.

Basically, what would be a good combination (he mentioned Dura-Ace)suitable for tandem use?

When he says "groupset" what does he mean? Does that mean STi's, brakes, and derraileurs or does it include crankset as well? The Truvativ Elita T5.5 crankset is a good crankset. I think Shimano makes an Ultegra Tandem Crankset and there are others around. FSA carbon cranksets are available as well but I think he will have to import this.

We use a XT long cage derraileurs on our tandems and they work well. The 105 rear derraileur on the Raleigh also works well. The Shimano Tandem hubs are good and strong but Bontrager Tandem wheelksets are also available.

Everything will depend on what chainblades he wants to install. Tandemmers like to go big on the main blade and go up to 56 teeth. Shifting of the front derraileur tends to become a problem and he has to make sure he buys a derraileur with the correct throw.

Hope this helps
