Found this video on cycle torrents, and it's a really interesting history of the bike as we know it.

 

Point was made that the 'social' bike co-evolved with the railway system in Victorian Britain, allowing unprecedented mobility, bringing about a transport and social revolution: commuters and travelers used bikes to get to train stations, then trains, then bikes to get to final destination.

 

Pity those who conceived Gautrain didn't think about this.
