Dick,

a 2x9 set is wonderful if you use a 12-34 casette at the rear but the gearing is still not as low as with a 22x32 granny. If you can't climb in 22x 28 then forget it.

The chainline is improved and you save a few grams.

However the trick is to get the two click, 3 chainring front shifter to work reliably with a double ring set up. I overcame this by using a SRAM Gripshift for the front. It also allows trimming of the front derailleur.

Middleburn and FRM make 2x9 compatible chainrings. I still have a Cannondale Coda CX2 chainset laying in my spare parts bin if you'd like to try a 2x9 before commiting to buy

ISIS is International Spline Interface Standard or a anti Shimano type of splined BB. Unfortunately they're not very reliable in a MTB application. Full compliment bearings can do that...

Octalink is Shimano's uperior splined interface between crank and BB
