I know it is not too accurate but I checked my chain wear with a park tool, the 1.0 side just squeezes in so I bought a new chain. After I took the old chain off I stretched it out as hard as I could accross the floor and then measured 36" and see 1/8" wear which as far as chain wear goes is not badly worn.

Is stretching the chain out and then releasing the tension before measureing fairly accurate or should I get someone to help keep the chain under tension?

With only 1/8 wear over 36" and being the original chain would my casette be worn much?

Thanks

Afterthought - I am going to hang the chain up and hang a weight and measure again, that will be more accurate

Was about to recommend that. I got a nail in the wall in the garage that I hang my chain from.

No flaming on the PT chain checker as I believe its a great way for you to know when you need to start checking your chain the proper way. JB did have a nice thread about his pimped up ruler but trying to find one is hard.

Also the shimano chain checker is the only chain checker that is spot on (NINJA EDIT: Oops, I forgot that on all of these gauges they also measure your roller wear so the Shimano is rather the more accurate of the lot). Eventually figured out how come and why while on my commute this week. Its expensive though (>R300) and only from CRC, so you might as well get the Park Tool spoke ruler and pimp it up like JB did.

(EDIT: With reference to Ninja edit, check out : http://pardo.net/bike/pic/fail-004/000.html)

Just hung my chain and attached a weight (not sure if that is needed). The wear is 3/16" over 48 inches. I don't think that would have done much damage to the casette which I will keep as a spare. I just got the bike as is with the worn chain so I decided to change the casette too so I will know what new should feel like as a reference point.

I may get the Shimano checker. I was in Cyclelab and saw the Park Tool was only R100.00 so I grabbed it, they wanted R500.00 for the Shimano. Hectic if you consider they probably cost the same to stamp out. JB can start a business copying the Shimano tool and selling them

Is the factory lube on the new chain sufficient for now?

Is White Lightning Clean Ride suitable for use on a road bike.

Oh no, not the lube derail :)

But in my humble opinion (and I will abuse my moderator powers here, so watch out :) ), the factory lube is good to go till your wife biatches about the black marks it leaves on the couch :)

I ride a MTB but its now just a commuter and I just keep my chain clean (got a post on chain cleaner gadgets) and slap on whatever lube I got (I've gone back to wet lube).
