Hi guys

Myself and two friends are cycling up Africa. We leave on the 22nd March 2011 from the Carel du Toit school for the deaf (that's at the Tygerburg Hospital).

Our route is up the east coast, after East London we will go inland to cycle across Lesotho.

My question for you guys is which route would you take out of Cape Town? I was thinking of following the Old Paarl Road parallel to the N1, then overnighting near Paarl, up the Franschoek pass to Villiersdopr (overnight here too) and make my way to Robertson

Any recommendations most appreciated

If you want to stay over in Franschoek, you can call Braam at Eagles Nest. This is a group/youth campsite and sometimes runs it like a Backpackers during the week or when they do not have a booked group. Cheapest overnight accommodation you will get in Franschoek. At the foot of the Franschoek pass.

Old Paarl road sounds the best. Still a lot of traffic though.

a much quieter option (but it might be a bit longer) is to ride up to Durbanville, down Wellington rd, left at the silo's onto the Malmsbury Rd (i think its the r304) then take the Wellington turn to the right. follow this road till the T junction and turn left to overnight in Wellington. ride over Bains Kloof into Worcester for a overnight stop and then its 60 clicks to Robertson.

the reason why i suggest this route is because of the wide shoulder on the busy roads.

Bainskloof on a bike?

Not so good.

I travel that pass a lot and it's narrow and u get a lot of helldrivers in that pass - on the other hand is it one of the most beautifull passes in the Boland.
