If the data that came out of my Garmin 310XT were true I would be a pro cyclist, it has my heartrate between 200 and 240 for the 2nd half of my ride, it has my cadence as high as 160 quite often in a ride

Even worse, Garmin Connect tells me there is a new firmware version so I click to download it and it tells me I need the WebUpdater software, I install this and run it and it tells me to connect my Garmin to the PC. WTF? My Garmin has no connector to connect it with

No it isn't cr@p.

Often when the batteries in cadence/HR sensors are a bit old the data goes off.

Secondly, how would you propose getting your firmaware onto your device without some sort of connection?

As I recall, the 310 can connect either via Ant+, or via a standard Mini-USB cable.

I would suspect a firmware upgrade can only be done using the cable because flashing the device would probably install new Ant+ software at the same time.

A little bit of reading the instructions goes a long way.

My mistake, there is a small link on the left hand side with special instructions for 310XT

It is ant +, no USB

The data is still cr@p though. If the battery is flat then it should be missing data, not thumbsucking it. I will try new batteries.

Update

Speed sensor battery is very flat, 0.22V down from 3V. I am suprised the speed/cadence was getting any data. The sensor has done under 500km in about 4 weeks, I didn't think it would go flat that fast

HRM battery is still over 3V, I will replace it anyway while I have it out but over 3V should still work 100%

Have a look at the Garmin Forums, there does appear to be an issue occasionally with the new smart heart rate belt.

Apparently one of the Polar ones fits and works better, I read about it on dcrainmaker website

Looks like the battery may have been the problem in the speed/cadence but I checked the voltage in the heart rate strap again and it is actually over 3.5V, it is the same as the new battery I have just replaced it with.

Other than the normal flat battery causing the transmitters to send erratic data, here are some more potential issues:

  • Cadence can easily spike, depending on where your pedals are when you negotiate a technical section, or are freewheeling down a hill
  • High heart rate readings can be caused by dirty sensor pads (How often do you wash/clean the heart rate strap?), or even certain types of fabric rubbing against the HRM strap cause a static build up, affecting transmission of data.

Connect does mean via ANT as well. There is still a 'connection', even if it is a wireless one. Firmware updates via ANT (For my FR 405 via ANT) are a two step process, first to the ANT agent, and then from there to the device.

Keep the batteries fresh, and the HRM sensor pads clean, and most hassles should be sorted.

I have just checked my Garmin activites, interesting to note that up until 3 rides ago the HR and cadence were 100%. In the latest 3 rides the heart rate went mad for the 2nd half of the ride and the cadence data was faulty for the whole ride. Maybe a new battery in the speed/cadence sensor will fix the HRM. That doesn't make sense but I will test it and see.

In Garmin's case this doesn't really help.

They're not particularly known for their well written and informative manuals. Though, like their firmwares, the manuals do seem to improve with repeated revisions.

I wash the strap after every 2 or 3 rides

The instructions were misleading, it told me that for my specific device I needed a firmware update so I clicked on "get started" which took me to another page. I assumed it was specific to my device and chose the most obvious option. The WebUpdater is not for the ANT+ devices.

I can see static causing spikes but I don't think it would do what you see in my HRM graph above
