  1. the nerdy answer: fact 1: cold air = increase in air pressure = more air / oxygen to the lungs = increase in performance fact 2: higher air pressure + speed = higher wind resistance In my case: higher air pressure + slow riding = no measureable increase in wind resistance conclusion: For me, it should be better riding in the cold. For Cancellara at 50 km/hr it's probably doesn't make a difference. Bottom line. I don't train when it's below 10 degrees, so I won't ever be able to put all this theory to test...
  2. thought about this again. I've seen a million Giant Anthems before, but none was this colour, and all of them had a big "Giant" painted on the tube. Seems like someone is trying to cover up something. Might not be such a bad idea to involve the cops...
  3. well, don't know if its stolen, but the guy who wants to sell it obviously doesn't have a clue. He's not a MTBer and also did not buy the bike himself. I'll at least ask where he got it and why he's planning to sell. That bike (looks like a giant anthem with cross max wheels and Rock Shox Reba shock) should be worth around R20k unless its seriously buggered.
  4. Got my bike on Friday, so went for a nice ride yesterday. The instant shifting and the grip shifter takes some getting used to, but otherwise this thing is out of this world. After one ride it's obviously too early to compare against my old X9 / XT / LX setup, but for now I can't wipe the smile off my face!
  5. jip, there are some very cool stuff out there. Check out Katz bikes (http://www.katz-bikes.com/). It's in German, but Google Translate makes life a bit easier. With these bikes the chain runs within the rear swingarm, thus the entire drivetrain is enclosed. Don't know why it takes so long for good technology to hit mainstream. Same thing with tubeless rims. Everyone rides tubeless, but 9 in 10 guys still struggle with rim strips and home made conversions. Not even the 40k bikes have tubeless rims standard.
  6. they say you add just under 500g to a XT / X9 setup and roughly 350g to a LX / X7 setup. The hub weighs in at around 1.7kg, but you throw out both deraileurs, two chainrings, the casette, the standard hub, one shifter and about 1/3rd of the chain.
  7. Still waiting for the final quote, cause they have to fit a chain tensioner etc because it's a full-sus bike. The price on the hub itself is around R13k - R14k...
  8. I bit the bullet. My bikes at BRC right now being converted to a "maintenance free rig". I did some calcs based on the rate that I replace / break / wear drive components (Deore / SRAM X7), and it seems that the "rohloff conversion" will pay for itself in less than 5 years (10000 km)rudi-h2010-06-17 08:25:08
  9. I can testify to their great service too! Had my frame replaced within 2 hrs. No paperwork, no hassles!
  10. Thanks for the tips. I didn't think of the whole "break the frame" aspect to get the belt on, so there goes the "belt drive" idea. Might consider the internal hub with chains / sprockets instead. Seems that in a 10 year period I will most likely go through 2 rear deraileurs, 10 chains, 3 sets of chain rings and 5 casettes. With that in mind the R10k knock once-off is maybe worth while. Not to mention the super smooth gear changes... I ride hard and fall often! If you didn't fall, you could've gone faster!!! - myself Anybody knows where to shop for internal gear hubs?
  11. I've done around 5000-6000km with my mtb, and this seems to be equivalent to driving a car past the 250000km mark. Everything is just on the verge of giving in. Deraileur is dodgy, chainrings are buggered, cassette and chain is blown, shock stanchions and seals are mangled etc. If I take my bike (commencal full sus) to a bike shop for a "full service" I would expect a bill of R6000 - R10000 (with replacement parts). My question: What does it cost to maintain a bike fitted with a belt drive and rohloff hub? Anyone that has such a rig that can give some advice? Is there anybody in JHB that sells Rohloff hubs and belt drivetrains where I can get some info and prices?rudi-h2010-06-13 06:21:20
