  1. Thanks for the feedback guys. I totally agree, Louis Botha was scary and dangerous. We are extremely grateful that only 5 falls/incidents were reported and in all cases, riders got back up and completed the ride. It was an amazing and to us, our most successful ride. Thank you guys for joining us and for all the support! We put together a small survey. Would be great to have your feedback. Click here
  2. Thanks for the feedback. The suggested routes are along quieter streets as cars generally move at a slower pace and give space to cyclists. I understand where you are coming from with the pavements, but when you have first time commuters, many of them do not use the pavements but use the road instead. Also, I found that those roads are not too narrow and cars to not pass too closely.
  3. I have passed on your concerns to the team. Let me know if there is a difference. Might only be from next week though
  4. Hi Guys Thanks for the share Catatonic_Joe. If you have not yet received the emails or are not aware, the 4th Freedom Ride will be taking place this Sunday! It is a brand new route and riders will be taken from Sandton Gautrain Station through the northern suburbs of Joburg and into Yeoville and Hillbrow. From there we will head down Louis Botha and back into Sandton. It is a 27km route, it is a social ride and not a race, and it is free! So bring everyone, family and friends and join us as we celebrate cycling in Johannesburg! Please do register at www.freedomride.co.za so we have an idea of numbers We already have over 2,000 registrations! As there are no race numbers we ask to you please carry identification on you during the ride.
  5. Hi guys It is great reading your feedback and experience of the EcoMobility and cycling into Sandton! I have shared this forum with the organisers and I am hoping that they get in touch with you guys to share your experiences on air. Remember, there is a Cycle Today Jozi Page which has the routes the cycle routes to Sandton. You can also find it here:https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zU_1OqJB7y9M.kAm34PwhX5bM&usp=sharing Happy riding!
  6. What you say is true, I feel safer riding on my own as well. However, I think that with riders like yourself leading a bike train - riders that are cautious and respect pedestrians and motorists, we can teach others how to be commuters as well. For me, I think that there are a lot of people who maybe thinking of commuting but are afraid, or who are just lazy and need to some motivation. These ar types of people that may take out their bicycle should they find a bike train that they could join. You would have to make sure riders are in a single file not two abreast, and are following your lead, not making their own rules.
  7. Peeps, checkout the cycle fridays topic. Please lets use to share our routes and time so others can join us. Also, you can join the Cycle Friday event on Facebook.
  8. I am looking for info online as well, as soon as I have more info I will let you know. What I do know at this point is that the service providers will be outside the Gautrain Station, and they will rent the bikes out at around R20 to R30 an hour.
  9. 10. Hi. the park and rides are not on the Freedom Ride site, but you can get the information here: http://citizen.co.za/786994/ecomobility-park-and-ride-information/
  11. Thanks for letting me know about this. I can and will follow this up immediately!
  12. Hi Guys. Sorry for not getting back to you guys earlier. As per @arabsandals you can take bikes on the Gautrain as long as it is in a bag. This can be difficult though as you need a really big bag if you do not plan to dismantle your bike. Also, during EcoMobility, there will be a bike share scheme running at the Sandton Gautrain station and CoJ informed me that there will be over a 100 bikes available. If they receive good response on the bike share scheme this may become permanent. So please lets use this.
  13. When I started commuting I use to use my MTB as well, never felt safe locking it up all over the City or at the Gautrain station (even though these are boomed off and have security). I now use an old road bike for my daily commutes, its a lot easier and I can lock it up anywhere without worry. If you thinking about making this trip to Gautrain often, I would suggest you get an old road bike.
  14. There are options available. There are park and ride facilities that are being setup around Sandton, you could park at one of these spots? Alternatively, there will be pilot bike share schemes in Sandton at the Gatrain station, so you could take the train in and ride to work.
  15. Hi guys. Thank you all for your responses. As you may have seen on the Freedom Ride site, I have added routes onto the route map, if you are willing to add your route onto that map please inbox me privately and we can do this. The more route there is the better for our fellow cyclists.
