  1. This is really sad. The Buffel is my favorite trail in all of Gauteng.
  2. Hi Everyone For anyone living in Gauteng looking for a next MTB adventure, have a look at Bezhoek: https://bezhoek.co.za/activities/ I did the most amazing ride today, 40 km of tough, technical riding. It is only 2 hours out of Pretoria, you show up to fully catered glamping, the people are super nice, and there is riding galore. Check it out!
  3. Thanks Dominic that is good to hear. Thank youbfor confirming.
  4. Hi everyone. I heard unconfirmed rumours that a mountain biker was mugged at Big Red Barn last week. Has anyone heard of anything of the sort? I have an annual pass and cycle there often, alone, at odd hours. Not so sure if that is such a good idea if this story is true. I also intend to ask the question to BRB themselves.
  5. 150 kg is the equivalent of two XC racers weight.....I would stay away from a lightweight XC setup. I would look towards trail bike type spec. Get a strong set of wheels, high spoke count, wide rims (like 30 mm ID) and 2.4 inch tyres. In terms of fork, something like a Pike, full suspension $$ allowing. 4 pot brakes for sure. Basically a trail bike built like a bomb shelter.
  6. I havent flown international yet, but I have done many domestic flights with my mtb. For domestic flights the cost vary but its not a lot, around R200 or so. The bag is checked as sporting goods. I use a Biknd Jetpack bike bag. I can highly recommend it. It is not as cheap as a box, but I think it offers more protection and you can use it many times over. Packing and unpacking takes 30 minutes. Pretty convenient.
  7. With all the talk about Breeds Neck, road conditions, I have never done the Magalies Monster but I intend to do it this year. I know it is considered a technical race, and the cumulative ascent is obvious. In terms of technicality, how would it compare to Buffel at Buffelsdrift? Would be interesting to hear from those that have done it before.
  8. Thumb shifters were better than the crime against humanity that way dual control.....
  9. I started racing rigid bikes, yes, rigid... With 1.95 inch semi slick non tubeless 26 inch wheels... I do race regularly, yes. Sadly, I am not an investment banker 🙂
  10. XC bike for me. I might be getting old, but when that gun goes off I go nuts like my dog when she chases the Checkers 60 delivery bikes. Modern XC bikes have come a long way. I ride a Norco Revolver, which has the mind of an XC bike and the heart of a hard charging trail bike.
  11. I run a Race Face Next carbon bar. It made a massive difference on comfort. Worth every cent.
  12. I am interested in buying a bike bag or box to fly my bike. It is a 29 inch full suspension xc bike. Has anyone used these: http://www.bikesafe.co.za Does anyone have advice or experience as to the best options? I dont want my bike destroyed in the proces.
  13. I have used the following combos: Ikon 2.2 front and rear Rekon Race 2.25 front and rear Ardent Race 2.35 front with Ikon 2.2 rear / Rekon Race 2.25 rear The AR + Ikon combo is the bomb for me. I can hammer corners much harder, and the rolling resistance penalty is small. Also this setup is pretty durable in terms of mileage.
