  1. Surley there would be an impact on the cardiovascular system if you were carrying alot more weight?
  2. Thanks Peter - so the weight of a bike and the tyres on the road don't have much impact on power output
  3. 20 minute TT on a hill. Two riders who are identical an all aspects (I know that isn't possible but just surmise). One has an MTB with knobblies and that other has a road bike. Obviously the speed will be different but how does the power output differ. When they download the results what sort of average power difference is there going to be and how can the guy on the MTB compare his results to the norm...or can't he. I would guess that most stats for power are done on a road or time trial bike so can one compare apples with pears? mmm I hope this makes sense!! I guess the bottom line is, if I only ride an MTB, can I look at stats for power done on a road bike?

Ah, pity its a small. Seems like a really good deal. Not convinced that carbon is the best for MTB - one big fall and its goodbye

    Giant Anthem 1

Our Anthem 1 just keeps getting better, for 2008 we spec a complete Shimano XT drivetrain including Hollowtech II crankset and hydraulic disc brakes, suspension duties are handled by Fox 32 F100 RL fork and RP2 rear shock we finish this impressive package off with parts from DT Swiss and Raceface.

But if if you are carrying the Camelback on a lighter bike it will make a difference

I think almost everything on the 2008 model is different to the Anthem 2 2006 model - Fox shocks rear and front, DT Swiss wheels etc - would it still be cheaper than selling my Anthem 2 and buying the Anthem1

I have the Giant Anthem 2 at the moment and have been more than happy with it, but am looking at upgrading Feb next year - its lighter and with Fox shocks it sounds a really good buy at R20000

Comfort comes with the duel suspension, but otherwise I want it for racing.
  14. Any one ride one of these. The 2008 model? Thinking of getting one.
  15. Thanks Peter, its all beginning to make sense Will probably be doing a TT in next couple of weeks. am finding training with a Power meter very rewarding - it seems to make a training session that much more precise/accurate. It also utilises the time I have more efficiently.
  16. I get the message, forget about my heart rate and concentrate on power!
  17. Apologies, one more question - lets say over time the average HR is 80% of max for my threshold and then drops to 75% after a couple of months of training - would that still not be an indication that if I did a time trial my threshold would probably come out higher and then I would train at a higher threshold and average HR? Sorry to harp on about HR...just want to get this clear in my head.
  18. Thanks Bruce this is a real learning curve, but worth every Watt I put into it!
  19. Thanks Bruce and Peter, I understand what you are saying. My threshold has been posted at 240 - 280 W but in my last training session someone mentioned this... I have a feelling that the intensity for the L4 work may be slightly low ( based on your HR) For the one session that you got pretty spot on in terms of power, average HR was 158 for both intervals from what I can see ? so 83% of your max HR You probably should be closer to 90% of Max HR Would this indicate that my threshold could be higher?Imtb2007-11-20 12:26:43
  20. I think you answered my question right there Bruce. So the higher the heart rate the higher the intensity of the training - which at the right time would result in quicker improvement on the bike. Is that right? So could one say that in a race one wants the intensity at a lower heart rate but in order to achieve that one needs to train at a certain power at a higher heart rate so that the intensity of training is higher. Threshold training...what % HR would be most beneficial 80% or 90% of maxImtb2007-11-20 11:56:13
  21. Thanks guys, I'm beginning to understand. So now to the training. I need to ride at 240 - 280 W for 20 minutes...do I need to pay attention to my heart rate ? Am I getting a better workout at a higher heart rate?
  22. Yup, sorry gotta do some homework with the kids - be back later
  23. Bruce along the same vein as Quicksilv3r. Speed will surely not always be the same at 270 W for an individual. If I drop down a gear but if I increase my cadence, perhaps get out of the saddle, won't I get back to 270 - is there no difference in speed. Sorry if I am sounding abit thick!
  24. Just the cadence will be slower?Imtb2007-11-20 10:41:24
  25. Okay I'm just trying to digest this - so if my interval is 20 minutes riding between 240 - 280 , riding in a really big gear to maintain that power is okay even if the speed is slower
