Event Name: WAKKERSTROOM eXplore 2022When: 05/03/2022 - 06/03/2022Where: Wakkerstroom, , Wakkerstroom, MpumalangaCategory: Mountain BikeBADAss Bike Adventures are Social Rides, perfectly suited for Gravel Bikers, Mountain Bikers, e-Bikers ( you choose your weapon )  Wakkerstroom eXplore began in 2021 and offers riders a bit of 'High Altitude' training or an awesome weekend breakaway with family and friends. The Wakkerstroom eXplore on 5-6 March 2022 is also perfectly suited for training for ULTRA events, with an altitude starting at 1760m above sea level - we will regularly hit 2000m above and even higher 😉 Day 1. If you’re planning on riding in the Wakkerstroom area, you’ll want to make sure you don’t skip leg day. With roughly 120 kms of well-maintained district route and alpine elevations (think 2000m) stretched in front of you, you’ll experience a sense of wonder. What adventures could await you and your trusty bike? Picture this: You’re cruising along breath-taking vistas, actually out of breath but adrenaline pumping. You can almost taste the ice-cold water and suddenly a water point comes onto your horizon. It’s a waterfall! What a welcome sight. You can’t wait to submerge yourself in its cool water for a refreshing swim. The thrill of adventure is too exciting not to share. Bring your family along to meet you (there will be no road closures) on the route so that they can also experience the jaw dropping splendour. Remember to be careful and courteous to other rider’s family members when en route. Of course, we encourage you to soak it all in and be in the moment but don’t forget to snap some shots of the view, the laughs, and the tears. Day 2 We’ll start off with a ‘little’ leg warmer to make sure you feel your calf muscles tomorrow. Then we’ll head through the nice to look at, tough to ride, Wetlands Game Lodge, where there will be Gate Control for security. Please ensure your Gel Sachets go back into your pocket for safekeeping. The route will be a mixture of Jeep, District Road, and single track. Truly a day to savour like fine wine. Sip on awe-inspiring views and get a taste of African adventure as your ride past plenty of game. At roughly 55 kms of riding (who cares about the climbing), the day won’t be too difficult, but it will be one for the books. Get ready to feel the fresh wind on your face, the burn in your muscles, the beat in your heart and excitement in your soul !  Wakkerstroom has country roads which have all the hills and dales, and the quaint town is surrounded by mountains with kloofs, mountain springs, vlei areas, dams, conservation and heritage sites.  It has AMPLE ACCOMMODATION, great restaurants, . . . and best of all, is less than 3 hour’s drive from Johannesburg (260kms) – making it PERFECT for weekend cycling ‘Break-Away’s 😉 Routes will be sent to riders 7 days before the start. 20. Event Name: Tour de Zoar When: 17 October 2020 - 18 October 2020 Where: Zoar, Western Cape Category: MTB Nestled on the Klein Karoo plain at the mouth of the magnificent Seweweekspoort is the settlement of Zoar. Sadly, despite the natural beauty which surrounds it, it is one of the most impoverished villages in the Western Cape. Unemployment, alcoholism and drug abuse are high, with young people in particular bearing the brunt of these social ails. It is for that reason that Mark and Colleen le Roux founded the Zoar Bigshots. https://www.facebook.com/colleen.leroux.3/videos/2944571948980775/ “The aim of the cycling programme is to provide a healthy and fun activity for the young people of Zoar to take part in, which gives them a reason to avoid turning to alcohol and drugs” explained Mark le Roux. “Providing a positive outlet for their energy and a space within which to develop their sense of self-worth are both exceptionally important benefits too. Already in the nine months that the Zoar Bigshots have been cycling as a club they’ve been able to travel to a few races around the Klein Karoo and Garden Route. Though results aren’t the aim, it’s great for the riders to get the opportunity to travel locally and experience different areas too.” In order to continue to grow the programme the Zoar Bigshots are hosting a two-day mountain bike tour in October. Dubbed Tour de Zoar they will take place on the 17th and 18th of October 2020. Would be participants are asked to make a R500 donation to the Zoar Bigshots, which will be used to purchase more bicycles, cycling kit and pay the travel expenses of getting the riders to future events. “At R43 262, in 2017, Kannaland [in which Zoar falls] municipal area’s real GDP per capita is much lower than both the Garden Route District’s average amount of R69 970 and the Western Cape Province’s R87 110” explained the Western Cape Socio-Economic Profile of 2018. “Due to the financial situation, pre-the Covid-19 pandemic, in most households in Zoar there would simply be no way in which the youth of the village would have access to bicycles” le Roux pointed out. “The Tour of Zoar will help us keep the momentum we had built before the lockdown and showcase the talent and love of mountain biking which the riders of Zoar have developed.” “Each Tour de Zoar will include two days of riding” Le Roux continued. “The first will be a 50-kilometre loop into the Seweweekspoort. It’s the undoubted highlight of the region and the best way to experience the incredible pass through the poort is by mountain bike. Day 2 will be a roughly 40-kilometre route, featuring jeep and goat tracks through Zoar, Amaliënstein and Opsoek. The highlight of the second day will be the amazing singletracks the Zoar Bigshots have been building in the area. Mountain bikers are in for a surprise, the trails are rapidly expanding in length and are fantastically fun to ride.” Due to Covid-19 regulations participant numbers for each ride is limited to 100 people. Riders will be divided into groups of 10-15 individuals and will depart from Le KaRoux, in Opsoek, at 5-minute intervals. To further ensure the safety of everyone involved there will be no official water points, though each day’s route will offer ample opportunities to refill water bottles at natural springs or spaza stores. To secure your place in the Tour de Zoar email Colleen le Roux at colleen@bigshotmedia.co.za. Riders will be required to book their own self-catering accommodation for the duration of the weekend, and do so in one of the numerous local guest houses. Nearby options include Le KaRoux Guest Farm, Barn 62 Backpackers, Opsoek Valley Farm Cottages and the Klein Karoo Valley Guest Farm. Go to Event Page

  24. Event Name: Kolsvlei 100KM MTB Challenge When: 30 March 2019 Where: Kolsvlei Trail Park, Western Cape Category: MTB Challenge or chill, the Kolsvlei 100KM MTB Challenge, presented by Boland SUPERSPAR, offers both and everything in-between on the 30th of March 2019. Located just outside the town of Piketberg, the Kolsvlei Trail Park plays host to the event which offers far more than its imposing name suggests – with a trail run, fun run, fun ride, relay and fewer lap options along with the flagship 4 lap 100KM MTB Challenge. The Kolsvlei Trail Park is nestled in the rolling hills of the Swartland; which in March lie fallow awaiting the winter rains and the planting of wheat. The region is the breadbasket of the province and boasts a tight-knit farming community; all of whom are eager to share their beautiful home town and platteland hospitality with visitors from Cape Town and further afield. This hospitality echoes as the ethos of the event. Riders and runners are encouraged to bring the family along, to spectate or take part in one of the shorter distance events. The Boland SUPERSPAR, food stalls, a pop-up coffee shop, cash bar and complimentary tractor rides to spectator points will ensure those not participating share in the challenge experience of the riders too. In the main event riders will seek to complete 4 laps of the 25km long Kolsvlei Trail Park route. Each lap features 388m of climbing, bringing the total for those who complete the full distance to a shade over 1 550m of elevation gain. While the ultimate aim is to complete all 4 laps, riders will be rewarded with 50km and 75km medals if they complete 2 or 3 of the 4 laps too. Alternatively the Kolsvlei 100KM MTB Challenge offers the opportunity of a 4 rider relay challenge. Each rider can thus dig deep and race a single 25km lap at full speed, rather than pacing their efforts to last the full 100km distance. While the serious mountain bike racing is underway the less competitive can take on a single lap fun ride too. For the trail runners a 10km route provides the opportunity for a trot through the farmlands. The course is perfect for competitive runners looking to challenge themselves to a fast run or less avid trail runners simply in search of a manageable route. Along with the trail run there is also a 5km fun run on offer. It makes use of farm roads so it is ideal for walkers, parents pushing strollers and the little ones on balance bikes. Competitive riders will be excited to note that Nexus 24 Segment Challenge for the King and Queen of the Mountain offers R4 000 in prize money at the Kolsvlei 100KM MTB Challenge. R1 000 cash prizes will be awarded to the men and women with the fastest times, on Strava, over the two Nexus 24 segments. These will be marked with Nexus 24 flags and highlighted in the race briefing. The segment challenge is open to all 100KM MTB Challenge and relay riders. Go to Event Page
